What are number pools?
A Number Pool is a collection of phone numbers that can be efficiently allocated and managed by administrators. It enables the streamlined assignment of numbers to users or operators based on predefined criteria. By organizing and segmenting phone numbers into manageable groups, number pools enhance both organizational flexibility and operational efficiency.
Number pools can be managed in two ways: dynamically or by reserving numbers for a specific pool. Each approach offers unique advantages, allowing organizations to design a customized strategy for phone number management.
Reserved Numbers
Reserved numbers are phone numbers that are not currently assigned to any pool. These numbers remain outside of other pools until they are explicitly allocated to a number pool based on specific criteria, often for future use. Reserved numbers are particularly useful for proactive planning, ensuring numbers are available when needed—for example, when onboarding new operators or filling specific roles. Reserved numbers thus allow for proactive planning, ensuring that numbers are always available when required.
However, it’s important to note that reserved numbers must be added to pools manually. Even if new numbers are purchased that meet the criteria of an existing reserved pool, they won’t be automatically added. This contrasts with dynamic number allocation, where new purchases can be automatically incorporated into a pool.
Dynamic Numbers
Dynamic numbers are assigned and managed adaptively, adhering to conditions set by administrators. Once a condition is defined for a number pool, all existing numbers that match the condition, as well as any numbers purchased in the future that fit the same criteria, are automatically added to the pool without requiring further administrative effort.
For instance, a number pool categorized by region, area code, or organizational roles can ensure that any relevant numbers—in both current and future inventories—are automatically included. This adaptive approach minimizes management overhead while keeping pools up-to-date with evolving organizational needs.
Administrators can also reserve existing numbers within a specific pool while applying dynamic conditions for future number allocations. By combining both reserved and dynamic number management, organizations can customize their pools to meet specific needs, ensuring maximum efficiency and a streamlined approach to managing phone resources.
Important note
The columns “Number pool name” and “Number pool ID” will not be populated in the “Phone numbers” report for Dynamic numbers. This is because dynamic numbers do not have a one-to-one relationship with any single pool—they can match the conditions of multiple pools and therefore do not exclusively belong to a specific pool.
